Chester Mine Hut

Known as Tullah Miners Hut or Chester’s Mine Hut.

Located just north of Tullah, take the Piemans River Road for 5.2 km and stop at the railway line. There is parking here, with the track being easy to find behind this spot.

With your back to the road and facing the railway line walk to your right next to and ON the rail track in the opposite direction of rail tunnel. BE VERY CAREFULL OF TRAINS.

Follow this for 1 minute and you notice the blue paint on the trees on the left and pink ribbons. This is where the track starts. It is a very beautiful walk in the rain forest on a benched-track (used by pack horses originally). Follow up and down the ridge, cross a creek and up again for about 35mins.

The hut will appear on right hand side. You can't get lost the track is very obvious and there are many marking ribbons along the way.

Please note that I left my oiled hat in the hut last year (shown in the last photo), and would love to get it back! Please email me olafmoonATgmailDOTcom if you find it.

History

Tullah is famous for two things, firstly having the heaviest rainfall in Tasmania. And secondly, as the home of Joseph Lyons, who was schoolmaster here, and later Premier of Tasmania and Prime Minister of Australia.

Construction: Built of sawn timber except for the veranda poles, with a wooden floor and covered in iron The outside dunny is complete but almost crushed by a tree. It is eminently retrievable but an energetic crew.
