Braddon River Lodge
Known as Braddon River Lodge
Located on the edge of Macquarie Harbour, behind Phillip Island and on the confluence of the Braddon River. It is hidden from sight until you motor up the river, but has its own private beach!
History
Built originally to support the piners, seeking Huon Pine. It has been modified highly and is in very good condition.
There were a number of camps that supported the pine industry on Macquarie Harbour, where tree fellers cut down the very valuable Huon Pines Dacrydium franklinii and floated them down the Gordon River. This harvest commenced in the 1890’s and continued to the 1960’s. Huon pine has a high natural oil content that stops it rotting in water, and therefore was excellent for boat building. However the trees take as long as 3000 years to mature, so that a self supporting industry was not possible over time.
This one was set up the the Pine Export Company led by Victor Nielsen who removed a hut from elsewhere to re-erect here. However it is unlikely the current hut contains any of the original materials from that one.
