Dom Dom Nissen Huts

Known as the Nissen Huts or Dom Dom Huts

Located off the Dom Dom Road in Marysville State Forest

History

An original guide indicates that the two huts shown here, were built to support the forestry industry. Others indicate that there were two Nissen style huts but clearly that is not the case from this photograph.

A past hut directory also associates the Dom Dom Track Nissen Hut with Hawthorn Scout Group. However, ExplorOz maps “Scout Dom Dom” and “Nissen Hut” as separate sites, approximately 870 metres apart, so they may be two locations. tourenwelt.info.

A local four-wheel-drive club report states that the site was damaged during the February 2009 Black Saturday bushfires. This is not confirmed.

Construction

The primary hut was a simple fibro cottage, but the use of the standard Nissen military style hut with the curved roof would indicate it was built in the 1950s when these were readily available at little cost. The style with the curved roof is very effective and quite strong when assaulted by poor weather or falling branches.

GPS location −37.607900, 145.665217 (one of two possible locations on this road).
