Also known as Fifteen Mile Hut. Originally it was known as Wild Dog Creek Hut; with later nicknames included Marc’s Hut and The Bong Hut.

Located beside the Taponga River, approximately 200 metres off Fifteen Mile Road, Big River country, Marysville Region.

History

The history of this hut is very well researched. It was built in 1969 by Dick Peters, with Ronny Dent, Chris Moores, Freddy Hughes and Jimmy Garret.

VHCHA’s history was researched by Sharyn Chambers in January 2017, drawing on interviews including Dick Peters’ son Bob, who was present during construction. Victorian High Country Huts Association.

Construction

The original building used prefabricated wall panels, numerous windows, a corrugated iron roof and an earth floor. It survived the 2009 Black Saturday fires and was renovated that October, including a verandah, carved timber sign and stone fireplace. Later tree damage partly collapsed its roof. Caretakers: Melbourne Jeep Owners Club undertook major restoration from 2016, working with VHCHA and the land manager. Volunteers raised and braced the roof, stabilised walls, repaired the fireplace, improved drainage and created steps to the river and an outdoor camping area. Melbourne Jeep Owners Club.
