Known as Tin Hut or Roddas Hut.

Located at Tin Hut Lake, west of Lake Augusta, Central Highlands. The area is known as Ninteen Lagoons and is popular for fishing. Best access is from a track at the south west end of Lake Augusta.

History

the hut was originally built in about 1923 (to be confirmed) and was known as Roddas Hut. The nearby grazing paddocks were known as Roddas Run). Certainly by 1927 it became well known during a search for a lost trapper called William Nutting who perished that year. A black and white photo from that year by L.G. Irby clearly shows the hut and searchers.

In 2024 the Mountain Huts Preservation Society decided that it was well worth saving and commenced a program of work on it, which is well documented on their MHPS page.

Today the chimney has been removed and a simple bench remains, so that it can only form a shelter hut, not a place to stay overnight.

Construction

During the restoration, it was found that much of the timberworkk was of very high quality and bore the name “Kemp and Denning” a well known business in Hobart that supplies timber and all construction materials. It is possible that it was pre-fabricated before being bought to the site, so the exact date of construction remains a mystery.
