Located near to Byles Hut, visible in the background, on the Sandbanks near Great Lake. It is located just outside the entrance to the Sandbanks.

History

The hut was built on land offered by Alf Bye to Eric Linton and his son Stephen. They constructed it in the early 1960’s after pre-fabricating it in Longford and carting it here on a flat-tray truck. The fireplace, bunk bed and pine lining were added at a later date.

Initially it was used as a fishing hut but was later compulsorily acquired the the HEC in 1967 as they had calculated that the Poatina dam would drive the water over this site.

Construction

A single room hut. Famous for its bull-nose iron roof!
