Coldstream Hut
Photos by Grant Henderson and MHPS.
Known as Coldstream Hut or sometimes as $1000 Thousand Dollar Hut and often “The Lodge” to regular visitors.
Located at the confluence of two rivers in NW Tasmania, and is quite remote. These are the Coldstream River and the Collingwood river in the Franklin Gordon Wild Rivers National Park.
History:
Often called the “$1000 dollar Hut” due to the damage that is received by 4WD vehicels that attempt to reach it, on a particlarly difficult track, it has become a “target destination” for keen 4WD’ers.
The maginficent hut was built in 1982 by the Northern Forest Products. In about 2016, some major repairs we done to the hut to keep it in good order, including the replacment of some of the uprights, plus some more sulubrious accommodation in the form of structured bunks, were included. Photos do not do it justice.
Construction:
Vertical timber poles with vertical boards and a corrugated iron roof.
