History:

The history of this hut is very interesting as there has been three Fire Tower huts, a toilet hut and also some ranger accommodation a little below the FT.

The best source of information is Fire Lookouts Down Under, which has three towers on the site:

  • First tower: timber, in use from an unknown date until 1987, when the original cabin was demolished. firelookoutsdownunder

  • Second tower: timber, erected in 1987 with a 3.5 m x 3.5 m cabin and a verandah. In December 2006 it was burnt over by fire and the lookout cabin was destroyed. firelookoutsdownunderfirelookoutsdownunder

  • Third tower: steel, in use from 2008. Materials were flown in by helicopter, and the new tower was photographed in March 2008. firelookoutsdownunder

The ranger quarters are the second hut on this site. The Fire Lookout page says the living quarters, only moved there before the start of the 2006 season, and were spared in the bushfire because they were 100% corrugated iron. That is the separate ranger accommodation rather than part of the tower. But the page doesn’t say where it sits, how old it is or what it was before 2006, so I can’t confirm it’s the lower hut you mean. firelookoutsdownunder

The 2026 fire: the site notes the tower was in a fire’s path again in January 2026. From aerial footage, the lookout cabin didn’t look to have much damage, the toilet block burnt to the ground, and the hut also looks to be intact.
