Known as Roarers Hut and in some cases as Stan’s Hut
Located west of the junction of Avondale Road and Powerline Road, in the Davies Plain region.
History
Stan’s Hut was constructed in 1985 on land owned by Stan Walker, a South African geologist.
Stan owned about 990 acres at Lake Finley, where he cleared land and grazed cattle. Friends from Tallangatta Valley regularly camped there, and those gatherings inspired a hut beside a small creek, deliberately tucked into the landscape.
Construction began on the Australia Day long weekend in January 1985 and finished by Easter. The builders used recycled materials, including roofing iron, beds from clearing sales, kitchen lino and a homemade heater. They followed traditional local timber-building methods, cutting slabs with a chainsaw and morticing them with an adze.
After Stan died, the property was sold. VHCHA’s account says forestry authorities allowed the hut to remain for public use. It is existing, and in fair condition. Forestry wants to remove it, but todate that has been held at bay.
Construction
All of second hand materials including used linoleum and corrugated iron. It is a log cabin with a corrugated iron roof.
