History;
Woollybutt Hut on Mount Wills, also known as Woolybutt Lodge or Tallangatta Ski Lodge, originated as the Tallangatta and District Ski Club’s mountain base in 1948.
The club formed in December 1947, following local exploration of Mount Wills and approaches towards Mount Bogong. Its aim was to provide accessible skiing for people from Tallangatta and the surrounding district. A contemporary report initially considered relocating a disused timber-mill house as an alternative to constructing a cabin.
Construction
The lodge actually built used timber largely obtained from its own site. It measured approximately 9 metres by 4.5 metres, divided into three rooms, with a sawn and split-timber frame, vertical split-slab walls and round-timber foundations. It had reached lock-up stage by 3 July 1948. The club later operated a rope tow during the 1954 ski season. Australian Alpine Club
The club’s Snowgum Hut, built near the summit in 1952, was a separate building. Woollybutt belongs in your Dartmouth region, consistent with VHCHA’s classification. Australian mountains.
